The first trailer for The Hobbit is out!
I may not have agreed with every decision Peter Jackson and crew made in The Lord of the Rings, but, overall, I thought it was a fabulous series and a great overall adaptation of the trilogy. (Or should it be “The Trilogy,” as there is no other in it’s league?) And I have great faith that Jackson and Del Toro will do a fine job here, too.
Originally, the movie was to be in two parts, with part two showing those things that happened “off camera” in the book, such as Gandalf’s investigation of the Tower of the Necromancer in southern Mirkwood and the White Council’s attack on it, but del Toro’s comments in the Wikipedia entry make it look like that’s changed. Still in two parts, the movie would stick to facts in the book. And yet, the trailer sure makes it look like Gandalf is wandering around a spooky tower…
(Come on. We all know evil demigods like Sauron just have to have a spooky tower. It’s in the union rules.)
Ah well. Something to chew over until next year. I can’t wait. 🙂
Meanwhile, my copy of The Whisperer in Darkness came yesterday, just in time for the holiday weekend! Huzzah! You can’t get much more “Christmas-y” than hyper-intelligent brain-stealing crustaceans stalking the mountains for Vermont.
Right?
Oh I assuredly cannot wait…
Yeah, I’m going to be chomping at the bit for this one. 🙂
I have upon more than one occasion commented that if I ever meet PJ, I’m gonna hit him. Then I’m gonna hit him a second time. If I’d never read Tolkien, much less worshiped him as I do, I’d have enjoyed the PJ films. As it is, there won’t be another motion picture version in my lifetime, so I’m pissed off.
I’ll see The Hobbit, because I’m a completest. But I’m afraid that I’m going to take exception to many PJ decisions.
Just as a beginning gripe, exactly how dwarf-like to those guys look to you?

I dunno. I must’ve read The Hobbit/LotR over a dozen times in my life and I just don’t suffer the outrage so many seem to online. Did I wince at the “Dwarf-tossing” jokes? Oh, yeah. Did I object to Arwen showing up at Helm’s Deep instead of her brothers and yawn during Aragorn’s floating in the river scene? Yep. But none of it was enough to dampen my great enjoyment of the movies overall. This was a reasonable interpretation of LotR, and I just don’t share the gas some people seem to have with it.

I need to see them more. At the moment, I’m too heavily influenced by the Disney/D&D “short and stout” trope. I am a little worried that they seem to have gone for the “Ren Faire Punk” look that was so popular in RPG art a few years ago, so, call it “wait and see.” I might wind up agreeing with you on this.

I’m saving it for Christmas Eve. Seems somehow fitting. 🙂
